Xunantunich is ancient Maya site located across the Mopan River in the village of San Jose Succotz,in Western Belize. It is about 15 minutes drive from San Ignacio town. To access this ancient Maya city, we need to cross the Mopan river on a hand-cranked ferry.


Xunantunich is famous for its large stucco friezes, which can be viewed on the East and West façade of El Castillo The Maya site of Xunantunich is classic period ceremonial site which was discovered in 1881 by Alfred Maloney. The main temple on site, El Castillo, rises 40 meters above the plaza level, making it the second tallest maya temple in the country. It is believed the site had about 7,000 – 10,000 inhabitants within a radius of 300 square meters.

 

This half day tour can be combined with another half day trip (Barton Creek, Cahal Pech, MPR, etc) to make it a full day tour.
